A utility bill that suddenly doubles can be caused by usage, billing periods, estimated readings, leaks, old balances or rate changes. Start with these checks.
1. Check the billing period
Make sure the bill covers the same number of days as prior bills. A longer billing cycle can make the total look dramatically higher even when daily usage changed less.
2. Look for a previous balance
A past-due amount, late fee or carried balance can make the current total look like a sudden usage spike. Separate current charges from old debt.
3. Compare actual and estimated readings
Estimated meter readings can create unusual bills, especially when the utility later corrects the account with an actual reading.
4. Check usage, not just dollars
Compare kilowatt-hours, gallons or therms with prior periods. Rates can change even when usage does not.
5. Look for leaks or equipment problems
A hidden water leak, running toilet, failing HVAC system or other equipment problem can sharply increase consumption.
6. Ask the utility for a review
If the account history does not make sense, contact the utility and ask what review or dispute process is available.
7. If you rent, check the lease too
When utilities are included in rent or billed through management, a high utility bill can become a rental-agreement question as well as a utility question.
